Knowing Jesus
The Gospel In Short
Someone has called John 3:16 "the heart of the Bible--the gospel in miniature." It reads, "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" It's so simple a child can understand it; yet it condenses the deep and marvelous truths of God's love and salvation into these few pungent words:
| For... | | |
| "God" | -- | The greatest Lover |
| "So loved" | -- | The greatest degree |
| "The world" | -- | The greatest number |
| "That He gave" | -- | The greatest act |
| "His one and only Son" | -- | The greatest Gift |
| "That whoever" | -- | The greatest invitation |
| "Believes" | -- | The greatest simplicity |
| "In Him" | -- | The greatest Person |
| "Shall not perish" | -- | The greatest deliverance |
| "But" | -- | The greatest difference |
| "Have" | -- | The greatest certainty |
| "Eternal life" | -- | The greatest possession |
Is there anything that you have to do? There is one word ... "believes" ... that's what you need to do. There is another Bible verse that reads, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31). The word believe means to trust or commit yourself completely to the Lord Jesus. To be saved means to be saved from the power of sin, those things we do that are wrong, and the penalty of sin, so that we can have "eternal life."
